For two thousand years salt was the mainstay of the economy of the Cardener, the river that gives the region its name, and today has an original tourist attraction in the Cardona Salt Mountain and Salt Craft Centre. The salt roads passed through towns such as Santpedor, Súria, Rajadell and Cardona, all good examples of a medieval past. Cardona Castle is a marvellous fortified complex that includes the Church of Sant Vicenç, a masterpiece of European eleventh-century architecture. Next to the ruins of another castle, Castelltallat, is an observatory from which to contemplate the wonders of the universe. Súria is a delightful town whose historic centre boasts portals, arcades, a main square and walls dating from the sixteenth century.
