Between the sea and mountain chains is El Maresme, an area that conserves a surprising mountain landscape, with outstanding parks— El Montnegre i el Corredor and Serralada Litoral—next to the Mediterranean Sea, where Alella DO wine is produced. The region was the summer home of Barcelona’s middle class at the turn of the twentieth century, hence its interesting examples of Catalan Art Nouveau architecture, particularly in Canet de Mar, Mataró and Argentona. A singular feature is the large number of museums found here, some of them dedicated to curious subjects, such as lace making, earthenware jugs, nativity scenes, molluscs and pharmacy. Cultural festivals, music festivals, craft fairs, local festivals and numerous gastronomy events are just some of the many other attractions of the region.

Calella, 3 February - 30 March

A heritage trail through the village will take the visitor past the most significant buildings in this holiday town in the region of El Maresme. These include a number of works influenced by Art Nouveau and early 20th-century style by the architect Ignasi Mas i Morell.

This free route follows the traces left by the Romans, the remains of the walls, the Baroque streets and squares, the neoclassical buildings and the Art Nouveau architecture of Puig i Cadafalch and Antoni Gaudí.
